Welcome to the future of computing! The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 is more than just a laptop; it’s a technological marvel. Bursting with features that redefine portable computing, this device caters to the needs of modern users who demand both power and style.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Design and Build
While opinions may vary, the redesign of the Zephyrus G14 introduces a notable departure in design. Appreciating gaming laptops with a touch of personality, the previous white aesthetic, though stylish, left me somewhat unimpressed, particularly with the “AniMe Matrix” lighting feature. The latest iteration of the Zephyrus G14, however, ventures into a different realm, potentially resembling a MacBook Pro, complete with a CNC aluminum unibody chassis.

The redesigned lid discards the personalized LED lighting for a straightforward slash across the center. Customization options are available, but the sole lighting choice is restricted to white. The Republic of Gamers logo from Asus, which has never been a personal favorite, now assumes a minimized position in the lower corner.
Upon opening the laptop, one might be misled into perceiving it as a standard productivity device. Although the keyboard offers single-zone RGB lighting, when set to white, its presence becomes subtle. With a generously sized touchpad and unadorned aesthetics, there’s minimal indication of its gaming orientation.
However, the gaming background manifests itself in the array of ports available. Despite the 180W power adapter lacking USB Type-C compatibility, the convenience of a reversible plug-in is maintained. Positioned on the left side are HDMI, a USB 4 Type-C port, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the right side, an additional USB-A port, a marginally slower USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, and a microSD card reader complete the connectivity options.
Measuring 12.24 x 8.66 x 0.64 inches and weighing 3.31 pounds, the Zephyrus aligns with the growing trend of slim gaming notebooks. For comparison, the 2023 Razer Blade 14 dimensions are 12.23 x 8.97 x 0.70 inches with a weight of 4.05 pounds. In contrast, the more conventional Dell G15 (5530) measures 14.07 x 10.80 x 1.06 inches, tipping the scales at 6.19 pounds, while the Asus ROG Strix G16 presents dimensions of 13.94 x 10.39 x 0.89 inches and a weight of 5.51 pounds.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Display Innovation
A high refresh rate and resolution make the G14’s display a visual delight. Adaptive Sync technology ensures seamless visuals, eradicating screen tearing for an immersive experience. Whether you’re gaming or indulging in multimedia, the display dynamics are sure to impress.

The Zephyrus G14 is equipped by Asus with a 14-inch OLED display that has a resolution of 2880 x 1800 and operates at 120 Hz. The screen is compatible with Dolby Vision HDR and G-Sync as well.
I thought the colors in the Deadpool & Wolverine video were decent, but not the greatest I’ve seen on an OLED panel. Specifically, I wasn’t expecting Deadpool’s red outfit to look a little more maroon in some of the pictures.
Alan Wake 2 looked fantastic on screen. In the gloomy weather, the woodland seemed lush and dark green, almost lovely, except that it also happened to be a murder scene. Although I could adjust it in the software, at first I thought the game should have been a little bit brighter.
According to our tests, the Zephyrus G14 can capture 81.1% of the more difficult DCI-P3 gamut and 114% of the DCI-P3 color space. That tops the Strix G16 but is slightly less than the Dell G15 (despite not having an OLED screen). Out of all of them, Razer’s Blade 14 performed the best, hitting 161% of sRGB.
At 392 nits, the Zephyrus ranked second in terms of brightness. Here, the blade prevailed at a brilliant 465 nits.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Keyboard and Trackpad Experience
The keyboard on the Zephyrus is sturdy, even if it’s not the most comfortable I’ve ever used. I did about as well as I could on the monkey type exam, hitting 128 words per minute with 99% accuracy. I was aware that I had reached the end of the key travel, but I wasn’t concerned about finger pain. Although the keyboard never became really hot, after using the system for a while, I noticed that my hand started to grow a little warm when I put it on the keyboard.
![touch-keys](http://bloggyguy.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/touch-keys-1024x1024.jpg)
The keyboard is only single-zone, although it does support RGB. At this price range, I would have liked to see per-key lighting, but the monochromatic look of this system is rather attractive. The volume control and armory cage keys are among the few additional keys above the keyboard; they seem a little strange at first, but I eventually got used to them.
I like that the Zephyrus G14’s 3.2 x 5.1-inch touchpad is large given the size of the device; this laptop will probably be utilized for work as much as for gaming. If you plan to use a mouse, you can always turn it off by pressing the F9 function key. Although the touchpad functions, the clicking is a little stiff. Here, I wish Asus had chosen haptics.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Audio & Sound Quality
The Zephyrus G14’s speakers pleasantly pleased me since they performed well for both gaming and music. Though tiny and light, most gaming laptops have better audio performance than the Zephyrus, so I wasn’t expecting much given its size.
I put on Yellowcard’s “Lights and Sounds,” and my room was quickly filled with the rock guitars, violins, and energetic percussion. Regrettably, the bass was a little underwhelming, but the volume increased significantly. Although there was some distortion when I turned the volume up to 100%, I didn’t need to go quite that far for appropriate loudness.
Dolby Access offers a range of equalizers and other Atmos settings if you would like to adjust the audio profile. For the most part, I found the default to be functional.
The speakers were fine for playing Alan Wake 2, although I did not play the music on them as loudly as I would have when listening to music. The conversation was well-balanced with eerie background music, yet I could still hear the fans above the speakers.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Upgrade Hardware
Eleven Torx screws hold the Zephyrus base to the rest of the system. The screws in the front, beneath the palmrest, are smaller than the screws used for the rest of the base, so take care to keep them orderly. Near the hinge, two small black stoppers conceal two screws that are cleverly secured with tabs rather than adhesive and are simple to replace.
With a prying tool, I was able to enter the system rather quickly once those were removed.

As is typical with many smaller laptops these days, the RAM is soldered down to the motherboard, but I was happy to learn that there are still a few user-replaceable parts. The M.2 PCIe SSD, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, and battery are all changeable and accessible.
Fascinatingly, the Zephyrus is Asus’s third fan. The third fan is intended to provide “extra heat” to the right heatsinks and out of exhaust cutouts in addition to the two spinners that cool the CPU, GPU, and liquid metal thermal interface.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Battery Life
Considering that earlier iterations of the Zephyrus ran for more than 10 hours during our test, the latest model’s battery life wasn’t very good. Although we can only examine what we now have, Asus has informed us that upcoming driver updates should increase longevity.
In our battery test, which includes online surfing, OpenGL tests, and Wi-Fi video streaming with the screen set to 150 nits, the Zephyrus G14 operated for 6 hours and 45 minutes. Running for more than eight and a half hours, the Blade 14 (8:34) and ROG Strix G16 (8:49) both beat it. At 5:51, the Dell G15 finished last.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Temperature and Heating
Even though the Asus ROG Zephyrus didn’t overheat during our stress test with Metro Exodus, you should still keep it on a desk or table.
The touchpad was a refreshing 87.4 degrees Fahrenheit, while the middle of the keyboard—between the G and H keys—reached 108.5 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature at the bottom was 116 degrees Fahrenheit.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : WebCam
The Zephyrus’s 1080p webcam is passable, if not spectacular. I noticed some graininess, but overall, the color accuracy is good, accurately portraying my brown t-shirt, fading navy blue sweatshirt, and blue eyes. In a group conversation, I don’t believe it would be too horrible, but it is easy to see when it fills the screen.
Using an IR camera to log in with Windows Hello is supported by the webcam. The webcam lacks a privacy shutter; however, it may be turned off with a keyboard shortcut.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Software and Warranty
The Zephyrus G14 from Asus comes with a little too much software preinstalled. Some of it is helpful, but some should just be optional or redundant.
Although Armoury Crate and MyAsus are essentially anticipated, Asus might want to choose one or the other for gaming PCs. Although Armoury Crate delves deeper into GPU and fan speeds, both of them include CPU and memory use. The MyAsus app shines when it comes to providing quick access to your serial number and links to customer support.
Armoury Crate also offers a ton of choices for GPU settings and other performance profiles, allows you to access your game library, and adds RGB control with Aura Sync. Given that Aura Creator enables additional lighting effects, Armoury Crate ought to incorporate it by now.
A holdover from earlier Zephyrus laptops that had the ability to display a pet on the lid is Virtual Pet. Until you close it, the pet will now merely roam about the desktop. Though many features require a subscription, GlideX is designed to share your Windows screen across several devices, including Macs and iPads. These two would be the first to go if I were to purchase this laptop.
The Windows Start menu is also replete with links, to apps like Grammarly, Camo Studio, Luminar Neo AI Photo Editor, and Spotify.
The ROG Zephyrus G14 is sold by Asus with a one-year guarantee.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 : Configuration
At $1,999, we evaluated the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. This configuration, which includes an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD, is available at Best Buy.
With the same processor and display, the base model costs $1,599.99. It also has an RTX 4060 (also at 90W) and 16GB of RAM.
Conclusion
The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 stands out in the complex world of gaming laptops with a unique blend of benefits and limitations. Positively, its neat and small design is notable for its perfect integration of portability and beauty. The brilliant OLED display enhances the visual experience, and the speakers are surprisingly powerful for a laptop this tiny. Furthermore, the Zephyrus G14 has an impressive number of ports to meet users’ various networking requirements.
The trip is not without difficulties, though. Though the 90W RTX 4070 seems promising, its performance is more akin to a 4060, which makes some gamers wish for additional graphics power. Users who value prolonged usage while on the road may be concerned about the device’s battery life, which is a crucial component of portable electronics and falls short of the standards set by its predecessors. Another point of concern is the overabundance of bloatware, which takes away from the user experience that is intended to be simple and intuitive.
When considering the benefits and drawbacks, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 presents itself as a strong option for people who value port selection, brilliant graphics, and a streamlined design. Potential customers must, however, carefully weigh their requirements while understanding that there are performance trade-offs, battery issues, and the requirement to work with pre-installed applications. In the end, the choice comes down to matching the laptop’s functionality to personal tastes and gaming needs.
